The Glue
The glue is the event. The draft. The actual being in the same room with your league. Not virtually, literally.
It is "the" day
Or in our case… several days.
It’s on the calendar. It’s not moving. There’s no “I’ve got a PTA thing,” no “I’m getting my back waxed that weekend,” no “let me check with my wife.”, No. This is locked. This is sacred.
Planned. Protected. Cherished.
Look, we’re all busy. Families, jobs, responsibilities, the constant pull of life coming at you from twelve different directions. Everyone’s got something. Believe me I get it. But get your priorities in order kid, this is once a year.
Carve this out.
Call it “self-therapy” on your Outlook calendar. Call it “mental health.” Call it “executive planning summit” if you need to feel important. I don’t care.
Just don’t be the guy who phones it in. (and I mean that literly)
Because there is nothing like being there.
It’s why concerts still work. You can’t replicate 15,000 people singing the same song in your living room.
It’s why live sports still pull millions. Those goosebump, “holy shit did you see that” moments only happen in real life.
Presence matters.
And just like being in a foxhole with someone creates a bond that goes beyond words… so does showing up every year for your crew. Your event. Your way. Your leagues way.
And here’s the truth:
If your event doesn’t make you grin…get a movement of excitement in your stomach, you’re with the wrong crew.
Go find your gang. Then commit.
We had an opening in our league a while back. A buddy, known him since high school, was thinking about joining. He said he’d “try it.”
Try it? This was an extremely rare opportunity.
I made sure he understood, this isn’t pickleball on a Tuesday afternoon at the rec center. This is mafia-level commitment. You’re in or you’re out.
Glad to report… he’s now a full-fledged member of the Fanatics. No parole, no early release.
Because that’s the deal.
Your league needs rituals.
Not just the draft, but the whole thing:
- The scene
- The walk-up music
- The food
- The gear (I started presents about 10 years ago)
- The atmosphere
And then the good stuff:
- The shenanigans
- The pranks (we’ll get there…)
- The nicknames born from terrible picks and worse decisions
That’s the currency.
Because here’s what nobody tells you:
Being together gets harder.
Rarer.
Life speeds up. Faster than you think. I promise you under 30 gang.
You don’t lose friends in a fight… you lose them in the fade.
Sad. True.
And this, this dumb, beautiful, chaotic thing we call fantasy football—
It fights the fade. We gotta fight...for our right!!
Yeah, it’s competitive. Yeah, we want the trophy. Of course we do. I want it every year.
But that’s not the point.
The point is having a reason to come back.
The league doesn’t just hold standings…
It holds the group together.
That’s the glue!
Got a league like this? A ritual that still pulls everyone back in?
Or are you watching your group slowly fade into text messages and “we should get together soon”?
Let’s hear it.
